Week One of the college football season is this weekend, so let us take a closer look into Georgia’s first game against 2015 ACC Coastal champions North Carolina. The game will be played on a neutral site (2016 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game) at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, so neither team will have a home field advantage. This game along with many others occurring that week will shake up the CFB’s Top 25 rankings.
College football kicks off in a big way this week, thanks to what is being tabbed as one of the best opening weekends in the sport’s history.
Part of that incredible slate of games comes when No. 2 Clemson takes on Auburn on the road in a battle of Tigers teams. Clemson, lead by Heisman favorite Deshaun Watson, is a heavy favorite in the matchup against its SEC counterpart, though Auburn feels plenty confident in its defense’s ability to make stops.
The USC Trojans are 3–1 straight up and 4–0 against the spread in their last four games as double-digit underdogs. The Trojans will be just that for the first time since 2011 this Saturday night when they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at AT&T Stadium.
Welcome to 2016! And the Big Ten kicks off in style, as all 14 teams are in action over a three-day period.
But there is one marquee clash, as LSU plays Wisconsin in iconic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Aside from that, there are no big-time matchups. In fact, four teams are playing FCS schools, with Furman at Michigan State; Murray State at Illinois; Howard at Maryland; Eastern Kentucky at Purdue.
The MAC also is a featured foe, with Kent State playing at Penn State, Miami (Ohio) at Iowa and Western Michigan at Northwestern.
Notre Dame and Texas will demand the spotlight on Sunday, Sept. 4, playing the only college football game of the day.
The 10th-ranked Fighting Irish are looking to build on a 10-3 campaign. Last year, head coach Brian Kelly’s team absolutely stomped the Longhorns in the season opener, winning 38-3.
Meanwhile, Texas needs to start showing marked improvement. Charlie Strong is entering his third year as head coach, and his proverbial seat will slowly begin warming with every loss. A win over Notre Dame would provide early-season relief.
According to Odds Shark, Notre Dame is currently a 3.5-point favorite. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
The two coaches have slightly opposing views of the venue for Monday night’s clash between No. 4 Florida State and No. 11 Ole Miss that winds up college football’s opening weekend (ESPN, 8 p.m. ET).
Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, previously known as the Citrus Bowl, is a mere 4 1/2-hour drive from the Seminoles’ campus in Tallahassee. The Ole Miss campus in Oxford is 627 miles away as the crow flies and over 150 miles longer when it comes to driving distance.
Francois was named the starter after fifth-year senior quarterback Sean Maguire all but ended the preseason competition when he fractured a bone in his foot during one of the Seminoles’ first practices.
